IN THEIR OWN WORDS: J&P CONSULTING GROUP
J&P Consulting Group owners Nina Page and Mariann Jordan worked in the non-profit sector before deciding to come together to start their business. They shared their story with us.
Citizen Newspaper: What is J&P Consulting Group and when was it founded?
J&P Consulting Group: The concept of J &P Consulting Group was started because both Nina and I have spent most of our professional careers working in NFP where the retirement benefits were limited or none. So, for us it was about survival before and after retirement. In 2020, J &P Consulting Group was born. We started a small at home business in Chatham to support small business clients that had the financial backing to hire our agency to complete a host of administrative tasks to better position their business to compete for grant opportunities. For owners Mariann Jordan and Nina Page, it was a great fit because they both had worked for top tier Not for Profit agencies where they were responsible for the grant development, quality assurance and overseeing the success of program deliverables.
Citizen: How did you meet and how did you decide to start J&P Consulting Group?
J&P: We met at Aquinas Dominican High School in Chicago, at the age of 14 and have remained friends and now business partners. We have been in the trenches of struggling as a startup business and came out on the other side. We know what it’s like to wake up and realize your dreams have not been met -- sometimes because you don’t understand processes or fear failure or in our case, concern about being aging seniors but knowing that you must keep pushing. As a small business owner, we understand the great needs faced by minority women and men. We both have our own personal challenges but during this business journey we have gained skills, learned to balance business and family and seek every opportunity to network and gain mentorships from other small business owners.
Citizen: What are some of the services you provide to clients?
J&P: The services J & P Provide includes supporting the development of a business plan, creating website content, creating program development and design, creating systems and policies, identifying community partners, leveraging partnerships and guiding business owners through the process of securing certain credential, such as GATA and addressing steps to put them in a position to compete for city, state, federal, county and corporate funding. I am proud to say that we have secured funding for all of our clients ranging from small grants of 10,000 up to 1.3 million. In 2022, we secured over 3 million dollars for our business clients.
Citizen: How many small business owners and entrepreneurs have you helped throughout the years?
J&P: Our goal is to service 6o business clients annually. We have exceeded that number.
Citizen: What is one of the most important things people who are interested in starting a business should know?
J&P: It is critical that you invest time into your business every day, through collaborating, networking or researching.
Citizen: When it comes to questions people ask about starting a business, what is a question that you’ve been asked over and over again?
J&P: How soon before I can secure a grant for my business?
