The Honorable Xavier Becerra a Featured Speaker at NMA’s 121st Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly: "Accelerating the March Toward Health Equity"

Silver Spring, MD – The National Medical Association (NMA) is hosting its 121st Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly, themed "Accelerating the March Toward Health Equity," July 29 – August 2, 2023, in the culturally rich city of New Orleans, LA at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. Each year, thousands of African American physicians and other health professionals from across the country convene to participate in the scholarly exchange of medical advances and to advance our health policy agenda for the coming year. This is the foremost forum on medical science and African American health in the country.

The NMA is excited to announce that the Secretary of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Honorable Xavier Becerra will join 123rd NMA President, Garfield A. D. Clunie, MD for a Fireside Chat to open the Edward C. Mazique MD Symposium. This year’s Symposium, “The State of Health in Black America” will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. CDT. Named for the esteemed trailblazer and past NMA president, Edward
C. Mazique, MD, the Symposium will address health disparities, particularly in Black maternal health, the Inflation Reduction Act, the impact of the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, and additional initiatives by HHS to address health disparities in Black and Brown communities.

The NMA is honored to host this informative, transformative conversation between two such distinguished and passionate health professionals. Dr. Clunie is a leading practitioner in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Secretary Becerra is the 25th Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the first Latino to hold the office in the history of the United States. Secretary Becerra has a history of advocating to ensure that all Americans have access to the affordable healthcare they need to survive and thrive. From his days as the Attorney General of the State of California, through over two decades in Congress, Secretary Becerra has worked to ensure every family has the assurance of care his own family had when he grew up.

He was one of the original cosponsors of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) which strengthened Medicare and lowered costs for seniors.
