Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, IL 60653, from 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM, The anticipated Black History showcase uses modern urban dance and performing arts to activate and engage with the youth to educate the importance of Chicago’s contribution to Black History Month.

The first carefully crafted Girls Like Me Project Inc. and Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies sponsored event will be the first of its kind in Chicagoland to incorporate urban performing arts interpretations as a form of storytelling depicting historical figures such as the Founder Father of Black History Carter G. Woodson and Ida B. Wells. The youth-curated event is intended to popularize and amplify Chicago’s black history and reclaim the narrative of how Chicago was the catalyst for Black History Month. The youth anticipated event will also showcase the history of Emmet Till, Fred Hampton, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and many more. Young professionally trained and self-taught performers as young as 6 years old will use the platform to showcase their talents to captivate, educate and entertain the audience and other invited youth groups throughout Chicagoland.

“The audience can expect to see 20 young urban creators from all over Chicagoland who all are using this platform to teach Black History in a language their peers can relate to,” said Black Magic founder and creative director Maya Unique. “For some youth, this will be the first time they will be taught that Black History was started in their backyard, and they should be proud of that. My goal is for them to be encouraged and motivated to share that knowledge with others”
