(Calumet City, IL) Calumet City is thrilled to announce the imminent arrival of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to assist local residents in jumpstarting their recovery efforts in the aftermath of the September 17 - 18 storms and flooding. The establishment of a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center marks a significant step towards aiding the affected communities, with the first center set to open its doors on Friday, December 1. This inaugural center is the pioneer of several others slated for opening in the near future, and their respective dates and locations will be communicated promptly once finalized.

Located at the Calumet City Public Library, 660 S Manistee Ave., Calumet City, IL 60409, this hub will offer comprehensive assistance to survivors in collaboration with specialists from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Residents can avail themselves of support to apply for federal disaster assistance, submit essential documents, receive guidance on fortifying their properties against future disasters, and obtain in-person responses to their inquiries.

Operating hours for the center are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays, ensuring accessibility to individuals seeking aid within their schedules. To enhance accessibility further, language assistance, including American Sign Language and translated materials, will be readily accessible at these centers. The selection of Disaster Recovery Center locations is deliberate, aiming to reach as many affected individuals as possible, with dedicated accessible parking spaces available at each site.

While physical visits to the Disaster Recovery Center are beneficial, it’s important to note that applying for FEMA assistance can be completed through various channels without visiting a center. Applicants can contact the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, access the online portal at www.DisasterAssistance.Gov, or conveniently download the FEMA App. Individuals using relay services such as video relay service or captioned telephone service are encouraged to provide their service number to FEMA during the application process.

Moreover, for comprehensive insights into the disaster recovery operation in Illinois, residents are encouraged to visit www.fema.gov/disaster/4749. The deadline to register with FEMA for assistance is January 19, 2023, emphasizing the importance of timely action for those affected.
