Eat Your Words will bring together 400 socially engaged, food-loving, art-enthusiastic Chicagoans, including artists, community leaders, philanthropists, educators, authors, and change-makers all passionate about helping Chicago’s young people build strong futures.

The celebration will be an in-person evening of food, music, and art at Zhou B Art Center, an event venue and art gallery located in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago (1029 W 35th St, Chicago, IL, featuring Jill Hopkins, New Media and Civic Events Producer at Metro, Chicago, and Live Host of The Moth Stories, as well as special guest author Erika L. Sanchez, award-winning author of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. 826CHI will also present its 2023 Missy Huges Teacher Award to Brennen Bariso of Chicago Math and Science Academy, an accolade given to a CPS teacher, recognizing their passion and dedication to Chicago's young people across the classroom and community through the power, freedom, and joy of writing. "Brennen not only supported our Young Author Book Project from start to finish, but had clearly created a classroom environment for and with the youth of CMSA that allowed for the courage, vulnerability and respect that students need to fully step into their writing processes,” said Robin Reid Drake, 826CHI In-Schools Program Instructor, “as an alumni of 826CHI’s YABP himself... he knew intimately the power of being heard and given a platform to share your voice as a young person.”

“We are honored to present this year’s award to Mr. Bariso as teachers are critical collaborators in our mission to support students with safe spaces to express themselves and have their voices celebrated through publication. I’ve seen first-hand the enthusiasm and love that Mr. Bariso brings to his students and watched excitement emanate from them as they write and share their words together. We’re so grateful to have Mr. Bariso as a part of our community in serving the students of Chicago.” Jennifer Steele, Executive Director.
