Blue Island Park District Commissioner Tonya Howard reflects on first summer serving on Park District Board
Blue Island, IL – Commissioner Tonya Howard says the first three months of serving on the Blue Island Park District Board have been everything she anticipated it to be and more.
“There are a lot of things happening in our country right now that are dividing us but at the Park District, we are bringing our community together, and I love being a part of something positive and good for our community,” Howard said. “It is an honor to serve this great community as a Park District Commissioner and to continue this Board’s commitment to ensuring the programs and services we offer are accessible and affordable to ALL members of community.”
Howard said she welcomes input from the community on how to improve Park District services.
“A big part of this job is listening,” Howard said. “We are here to serve the public. The programs and services we offer won’t be successful if the community does not get behind them. My door is always open, and I welcome anyone with ideas to reach out to me.”
Commissioner Tonya Howard is a nine-year resident of Blue Island who has engaged herself in civic life for over a decade. She professionally works in Supervision for the Harrah’s Gaming Group. She has also worked as a publicist for STH MEDIA LTD (family business) for the past six years.
She is happily married to her best friend, Sean. Together they have five adult children, Chyna, Chanel, Jazmyn, Joi, and Attorney Sean Howard II. She also has six grandchildren, Reign, Savannah, Bella, Shannon, Shane, and Patrick.
“As a mother and a grandmother, I understand the importance of parks and recreation to families,” Howard said. “The one thing I have learned since being on this Board is how much the staff and the Board genuinely care about providing something truly special to our community and that commitment is reflected in the success of programs like our Summer Camp, Basketball, Soccer, and other programs. I have learned a lot in the last few months, and I look forward to continuing to do my part to bring quality recreation to the Blue Island community.”
