CHICAGO ALDERMANIC BLACK CAUCUS RESPONDS TO APPOINTMENT OF CPD CHIEF LARRY SNELLING TO SUPERINTENDENT

The Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus are expressing their collective optimism at the recent appointment of Chicago Area 2 Deputy Police Chief Larry Snelling as the next Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.

“Chief Snelling has exemplified the necessary background and high character worthy of this post. He has the tenure, poise, and experience to enhance and reform the current organization into a more inclusive, sensitive, and systematic approach to policing. “says Caucus Chairman, Alderman Stephanie Coleman.

The Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus views Chief Snelling’s appointment as a giant step towards progress. However, there are still concerns about the numerous challenges which the Chicago Police Department has ahead. Particularly issues involving response time in minority communities, the relationship between the police and all communities, and updated cultural diversity training for all officers.

Chairman Coleman adds, “We look forward to Chief Snelling’s presentation during the September 13th, meeting of the full City Council. Upon the approval of his appointment, the Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus will seek to engage with Superintendent Snelling and work together on the issues that impact all of our communities. We share in Mayor’s Johnson’s vision of a better, stronger, and safer Chicago.

“The City of Chicago is in great hands with the new superintendent Larry Snelling. We want a superintendent who is not just born and raised in Chicago but understands the communities that make up Chicago as well as building relationships. The Chicago police department needs to regain the trust of ALL its citizens and this appointment is a great start.” says 20th Ward Alderman, Jeanette Taylor.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Chief Snelling as Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. He not only has the right experience and background training our officers, has given them the tools to do their jobs, and displays the utmost professionalism but he also knows that well-trained officers are community leaders and build trust between the department and the communities who need it most. He's a strong leader that I know will put everything he has into moving the CPD in the right direction. As the city's budget hearings are just around the corner, I promise to make sure our hard-earned tax dollars are appropriately disbursed to promote heightened and affective performance by the CPD”. says 28th Ward Alderman Jason Irvin.

3rd Ward Alderman and City Council Finance Chairman Pat Dowell adds, “Larry Snelling understands the very fiber of Chicago and has given his life to the upward mobility of a diverse and credible police force. He is a realist in that he knows there are many challenges that must be addressed immediately. He has a keen sense and understanding of what it takes to navigate the entire department forward and a real commitment to making our communities safe. As Superintendent he will make our residential areas and commercial corridors more secure by paying attention to the big and little things that people care about. “
