Jordan Karim founded Flora & Noor, her Halal-certified, vegan, cruelty-free skincare company because of her love of skincare.

Karim is one of six Black beauty business owners who received grant money as part of Glossier’s 2023 Grant Program for Black-Owned Beauty Businesses. Along with the grant money, Karim and the other beauty business owners will be paired with a Glossier advisor and receive mentoring and access to business programming, as well as have one-on-one meetings with Glossier CEO Kyle Leahy, program alumni and other experts.

This is the third cohort of the Glossier Grant Program for Black-Owned Beauty Businesses. The grant program was launched in 2020, with the vision to change the way the world sees beauty, by providing Black beauty business founders with funding and mentorship, as well as other resources to make their businesses sustainable and successful. Since the program was launched, Glossier has partnered with more than 30 founders from 26 beauty brands.

According to Glossier, the business owners were chosen because the stories behind their brands stood out, as well as their visions, missions and plans for their futures. The Flora & Noor beauty range targets chronic skin conditions and the prices range from $24 for individual items to $98 for collections. Ingredients are from Africa and the Middle East, which also is where the inspiration for the products come from.

It was important for the products Karim created for Flora & Noor to be Halal-certified, cruelty-free, vegan, paraben-free, alcohol-free and sulfate-free. Karim said that alcohol can be drying on the skin for those with sensitive skin; also with Halal beauty, alcohol free products fit into that category.  While sulfates cleanse, in skincare, it can cause reactions for people with sensitive skin. But, in shampoos, sulfates aren’t necessarily bad.

“Sulfates and parabens can also wash off the skin’s protective barrier and cause redness and dry skin and itchiness. For us, that’s something our consumers are coming to us specifically to avoid so that’s not something we want to include in any of our products. Especially for those who have dermatitis, psoriasis, edema, eczema, sulfates are not good for those who have conditions like that,” Karim said.

Flora & Noor has launched at Ulta Beauty and is the first Halal brand to do so. For Karim, who grew up near Ulta Beauty Headquarters, having her brand at the store is a full circle moment. “I feel so grateful and so honored to be amongst all the other brands at Ulta Beauty. It also feels like we’re really breaking barriers in inclusivity in the industry,” Karim said, adding that she would see companies use Muslim women as marketing tools, even though those companies didn’t use ingredients that were permissible by the Muslim religion.

It feels good for Karim to be the first Halal-certified skincare brand at Ulta and she knows that Muslim women who shop at Ulta can use Flora & Noor in good conscious and feel proud to do so. It all falls in line with the overall goal of Flora & Noor, which is to increase accessibility and make Halal beauty more accessible.

Currently, the most popular products are the Oatmeal and Shea Body Butter, which can be used for those with eczema, as well as the Super Glow Niacinamide and Vitamin C Gel Moisturizer and Boost and Brighten Cleanser and Brightside Serum. Recently, there has been an uptick in people using the Flora & Noor Rose Renewal Cleanser, which can be used by people with dry and sensitive skin. It works well with Tretinoin.
