Local Churches Join Forces to Host Vaccine, Health and Fitness Event Matteson, Illinois
The joint effort hopes to reach the masses to ensure that every one has access to vaccinations this fall.
Organizers believe the event is especially critical as the cold weather approaches and experts predict a severe flu season and increase in COVID cases as people are more indoors during the winter months.
“We want to make sure that our community is prepared this flu season and aware of our presence and availability to provide the necessary resources to meet the over all needs of the community.” said Amelia Flemming, the event coordinator. “It is important that everyone is vaccinated to prevent illness from COVID-19 and the flu. As churches, it is part of our ministry to care about not only the spiritual needs of our members and neighbors but also to encourage good health.”
The Cook County Department of Public Health will provide Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccinations and boosters for all ages. Walgreens will be on hand to provide flu shots as well.
In addition to the vaccinations, health and wellness screenings for blood pressure and glucose will be available as well as a breast exam presentation.
Beside the health screenings, there will be opportunities for people to participate in our fun and fitness activities including Double Dutch jump rope and Hula Hoop contests led by Coach Bernadette Rapier of BLM Fitness “so that folks can move their bodies,” Flemming said.
Community members can also pick up healthy food from the food pantry which will be open during the event.
“People can join us as we end our fitness segment with line dancing and then pick up a healthy box of food to go,” Flemming said.
Other event sponsors/ participants include Chicago Internal Medicine Practice and Research (CIMPAR), the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), Walgreens, Caan Nursing Academy, Sisters Working It Out (SWIO), Matteson Fire and Police Departments, State Representative Debbie Myers-Martin, Target, Culvers and Subway.
