COMMISSIONER DEER LEADS NECESSARY PANEL DISCUSSION ABOUT BROADER PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS, USEFUL PROGRAMS, AND FUNDING
The national health care costs of domestic violence are high, with direct medical and mental health care services for victims amounting to nearly $4.1 billion.
Dennis Deer-Cook County Board Commissioner of the 2nd District- was joined by Cook County Mental Healthcare officials, 16th Ward Alderman Stephanie Coleman, Cook County Mental Health Officials, and various anti-domestic violence advocates in bringing attention to past and current trends involving domestic violence.
Commissioner Deer felt compelled to assemble these best providers of mental health and domestic violence professionals to partake in a panel discussion aimed towards bringing attention and advocate for funding to offset many of the challenges related to domestic violence.
“I hope that the people of Cook County will look at this panel and see how serious we are about making sure that we have a zero-tolerance policy for violence of any kind, and particularly violence in the home. I am proud to live in a county where you have the Cook County Board President, the Governor, the Attorney General, all standing up together to say, we want you to be safe in your home, and domestic violence of any kind is not going to be tolerated.’’ says Commissioner Deer.
Commissioner Deer adds, “Beyond raising awareness about domestic violence, it is about taking concrete action and correspondingly providing appropriate resourcing and building a supportive system. I have worked diligently with President Preckwinkle and my fellow Commissioners to increase funding to offer more services such as this new powerful tool that will hopefully ease the burden of court bureaucracy to individuals who must deal with the mounting issues surrounding domestic violence.” says Commissioner Deer.
Commissioner Deer has continued to pass legislation to not only increase funding for matters involving domestic violence, but to also bring more attention to the ever-evolving financial cost that are associated.
“I know firsthand the impact that domestic awareness has on children. As a daughter of mother who was victimized by domestic violence, I can never forget the horrifying experiences in which I witnessed. I fully support Commissioner Deer in this collective mission to firmly bring attention to this horrible plague that his negatively impacted thousands of our residents.” says Chicago Alderman Stephanie Coleman.
Over the past year, Commissioner Deer and President Preckwinkle announced plans for an all-new Cook County Department of Mental Health that is being geared toward expanding. Of the $60 million dollars budgeted for this endeavor, $16 million will be used to expand personnel and mental health support at existing Cook County clinics.
During the panel discussion Commissioner Deer will ask the various industry professionals that are present to speak of how they collectively can push for innovative programs for victims of domestic violence who look to Cook County Health as their provider. Given the enormous impact in which domestic violence is having on thousands of Cook County residents, Commissioner Deer is committed to continuing his advocacy of state funded programs now being offered to county residents.
Deer continues, “For the first time in decades, there is a firm focus to help residents in their daily struggles concerning domestic violence. We must now promote these programs and services to offset the many potentially dangerous side effects of individuals suffering from this dangerous act.”
