New Dolton 149 Board of Education President Wilbur Tillman Sets “New Course”

Dolton School District 149’s new Board of Education President, Wilbur Tillman, who presided at his first full board meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22, is aiming to “set a new course” for the district.

Tillman, who was elected at a July 14 board meeting replacing Rayya Ghani, plans to “set a new course” for the south suburban elementary and middle school district of 2,207 students.

“With a new superintendent, Dr. Maureen White, who assumed her post on July 1, the board majority also decided that a new board president was necessary to infuse Dolton 149 with
fresh leadership overall and to set new course for the district,”
said Tillman. “Our primary aim is to provide our students with
the best possible education, and the board believes a fresh district leadership team will accomplish the goal of leveling up students, staff, and teachers alike.”

At last Thursday’s meeting, the board also approved its
official monthly meeting calendar for the 2022-2023 school year:
October 27, 2022, November 17, 2022, December 14, 2022,
January 26, 2023, February 23, 2023, March 23, 2023, April 27,
2023, May 25, 2023, and June 22, 2023.

Tillman, who has served on the Dolton 149 board since 2015, encourages parents to attend the board’s monthly meetings.

“The more that parents are involved with their child’s
education, either by communicating with their child’s teacher or
with members of the Board of Education or both, the better will
be their child’s academic performance and the school’s performance,” said Tillman. “We, as school board members, we want to know the concerns and ideas of parents because parents are a vital part of the solution to improving student education, so
we encourage them to attend our meetings.”

The next regular board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Oct.
27 in the gymnasium of the Dirksen Middle School, 1650
Pulaski Rd, Calumet City.
