102-YEAR-OLD ELLEN BROWN DIXON WAS GRANTED HER WISH BY GOD TO LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO VOTE TO ELECT THE NATION’S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT
AND NOW CONSIDERS LIFE FULL OF “OVERTIME”

“ELLEN DIXON DAY” HONOR, ALONG WITH 102 ROSES
SOUTHSIDE RESIDENTS PACK HISTORIC CHURCH AND GAVE THANKS
FOR THE 102 YEARS OF LIFE FOR MOTHER DIXON
(Blue Island, Ill) Robert “Bob” Rita- Illinois State Representative of the 28th Legislative District-- was joined by fellow elected officials,28th District residents, and others in a birthday celebration of a 102-year-old pioneer, Ellen Brown Dixon.
Affectionately known as “Mother Dixon” by her church family, Mother Dixon was born in Canton, Mississippi, but has called Chicago her home for over eight decades. She has centered her life around God, her family, and the upward mobility of African American people around the world. She considers her current days of life as overtime since the election of former U.S. President Barack Obama.
“We are once again grateful, honored and blessed to take part in Mother Dixon’s celebration of now 102 years of life. As I stated at her 101st birthday, I consider her life as an example of how our country has evolved. She is living proof of how determination, perseverance, commitment to family and a love of God can equate to a long, beautiful life. I can’t wait to return next year for her 103rd birthday celebration.” says Illinois State Representative Bob Rita.
Ms. Ellen Brown Dixon, born November 18, 1920, in Canton, Mississippi. She moved to West Memphis, Arkansas in 1937, at the age of seventeen. She graduated from Central High School in Helena, Arkansas. Ms. Ellen moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1940. However, in 1960, she moved to Roseland, an area on the southside of Chicago. Ms. Ellen made this her permanent resident and has been living there for the past 61 years.
Ms. Ellen has always been a diligent worker, her first job was with Zenith Electronics, as a factory worker building televisions. She, begin a new career with the Beverly Bank of Chicago, which is where she retired in 1983.
Ms. Ellen was married to the man of her dreams Mr. Earnest Dixon, who was 96 years old when he passed away in October of 2020, they were married for 27 years. Ms. Ellen had a son who lived in Germany, but who has since passed away. A mother to many children in the community, she extended her love and care to all of them.
Ms. Ellen gave back through her giving, outreach at her local churches and in the community. She volunteered for programs, fundraisers, cooked, baked, and served wherever was needed on her block and community.
Ms. Ellen was in a group called “Ten Friendly Ladies,” they would get together and have monthly luncheons or enjoy fun activities. Also, she enjoyed baking cakes, playing bid whiz, and entertaining family and friends.
Ms. Ellen loves God. She feels He has been with her every step of her journey throughout these 102 years of her life. Her Motto is: “You cannot walk or live this life without God leading your path.”
