A BETTER WEIGH INTRODUCES HOLIDAY WELLNESS CHALLENGE FOR FAMILIES

BY TIA CAROL JONES

Walton wants to help families get and stay healthy this Holiday
Season. She is offering the 28-Day Family Wellness Challenge,
Holiday Edition.

Walton is a Licensed Practical Nurse and founder of A Better Weigh, Inc. The medical weight loss center, which was founded in 2009, has three locations, the Beverly neighborhood in Chicago, Tinley Park and
Schererville, Ind.

The 28-Day Family Wellness Challenge, Holiday Edition is a free resource that includes a holiday-themed meal planner and recipe guide, healthy eating shopping tips and home exercises for the entire family. It is free to access the guide. While the meal planner and recipe
guide are based on a standard American diet, there are options to purchase an e-book for $14.99 that has Vegetarian, Vegan, Keto, Paleo, Pescatarian, Gluten-Free and Bariatric Maintenance-Based Meal Plans.

“This is the first meal plan that we offered that incorporates children because childhood obesity in the State of Illinois is one in three children. That’s something we wanted to touch on because we have a lot of patients come in and ask what they can do for their kids. We don’t serve children, but we wanted to include them in the Family Wellness Challenge,” Walton said.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, A Better Weigh released a 28-Day Challenge. People were excited about that challenge and because it was so well-received, Walton decided to release the 28-Day Family Wellness Challenge, Holiday Edition. She thought releasing it for the holidays would be a good idea because it is a time when people tend to overindulge and people become most conscious about what they are eating and how much they are eating.

“With Fall and Winter setting in, that’s when you kind of get the Blues and so we have our Family Challenge, we also touch on things like staying healthy during cold and flu season, dealing with COVID-19,
stress management, alcohol consumption, sugar and sodium intake, sleep, weight management and overall healthy habits,” Walton said.

Walton wants people to use the resource to be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. She believes the meal plan, recipes, tips, along with the fitness component enable people to have holistic wellness.
She wanted people to increase their activity level while they are at home. There are options for people of every mobility level.

Walton believes the Wellness Challenge can guide parents to help children develop healthy habits earl so they might not have to deal with obesity and being overweight. A Better Weigh received a COVID-19 Vaccine Community Based Education and Outreach grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Walton said another component of keeping a person’s immune system healthy is having overall healthy nutrition, in addition to people getting vaccinated against the flu and
COVID-19.

“Focus on your nutrition and overall wellness because that keeps you healthy as well,” she said. “A lot of times when people did have complications from COVID-19, one of the main things that put people at higher risk was being overweight or obese, or having illnesses that were related to being overweight or obesity.”
