National Campaign Supporting Vaccine Equity in Black
Communities Partners with Alpha Kappa Alpha in Chicago

The W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute, partnered
with the Central Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc.® on Thursday, March 17, to co-host The Chicago Stay Well Community Vaccine Event at Malcolm X College in a continued effort to make vaccines more accessible to Chicago’s Black community. With mask mandates being lifted in every Chicago County except one, the urgency for vaccines remain high.

The vaccine event is one of several vaccination pop-ups in
select cities across the country as part of the We Can Do This public education campaign to encourage vaccinations and bring free health resources to Black communities amid COVID-19.
Health screenings and HIV testing were also available.

Over 125 were vaccinated on Chicago’s west side. The popup events have been attended by more than 3,000 people, over 1,100 of whom decided to get their vaccines.

“While things may seem to be a little better, we realize that
the vaccination rates for African Americans remain much lower than the majority population in our nation,” said Dr. Randall C. Morgan, Jr., President and CEO of the W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute. “Under the efforts we are having today along with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, we are working very hard to encourage everyone to not only become vaccinated but to be up to date with their boosters and to make sure that their children are vaccinated and safe.”

Also in attendance were Lieutenant Governor of Illinois,
Juilana Stratton and past president of the National Medical
Association, Dr. Niva M. Lubin-Johnson.
