THE 40TH ANNUAL CHICAGO MUSIC AWARDS SET FOR APRIL 2
celebration will make history by honoring the best of
Chicagoland entertainers in all genres of music. The biggest
event night in music in Chicago will take place at 6 p.m.
Saturday, April 2, at the Congress Plaza Hotel and Convention
Center, 520 S. Michigan Avenue.
The live, in-person celebration of the Chicago Music
Awards will be hosted by Chicago Emmy Award Journalist
Art Norman, Radio Personality Bionce Foxx, and Chicago
Artist Big EZ. The awards showcase will kick off with a
riveting performance by Jesse White and the Jesse White
Tumblers.
According to the producer, Dr. Ephraim Martin, President/
Chair of Martin’s International, and Black Heroes Matter
Coalition, who led the victorious campaign to rename
Lake Shore Drive as DuSable Lake Shore Drive, 10 special
awards will be handed out.
One of the most coveted Honor is that of Chicago’s
founding father, Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable Humanitarian/
Community Awards to be presented to Ms. Melody
Spann Cooper- President of WVON 1690 Radio/Midway
Broadcasting Inc., and Latin Activist and Philanthropist
Cesar Rolon, and Imagine Marketing Consultant. The
Lifetime Honors will be given to the late Blues Great Jimmy
Johnson, the Chosen Few DJs, and Illinois Secretary of
State Jesse White for the Jesse White Tumblers’ 63 years of
outstanding contributions to entertainment in Chicago and
the world.
The Marcus Garvey History and Education Lifetime
Award will be bestowed on Journalist/Historian Salim Muwakkil.
The Martin’s International Awards of Honor will be
given to Dr. Calvin “Doc” Flowers – Manatee Records for
contributions to the music industry. Three grocers for years
of community and humanitarian contributions: Rogers Park
Fruit Market for 50 years, Old World Market for 40 years, and
LaFruteria Inc. for 30 years.
Doc Payne and the Payne Relief Blues Band with Billy
Branch, Toronzo Cannon, and Vance Kelly will do a special
tribute to three of the great Blues entertainers. Jimmy Johnson,
Syl Johnson, Sam Lay, and Pervis Spann who the world
has lost this year. “Jimmy Johnson was a Blues Legend and
mentor to many, not only musically, but also in life, ‘’ said
Julia A. Miller, President & CEO of Delmark Records. “He
was a force of nature, he was a Delmark artist for many decades, and we could not be more proud to have worked with
him. We treasure his legacy. We are very glad to participate
in this commemoration of Jimmy’s life and music.”
