Local Eyebrow Icon Focuses On Inner Beauty

LaGena Cain is the owner of Poise Beauty, a lifestyle brand and cosmetic company. Cain grew up in the beauty world. Her aunt named her first salon after her.


“Growing up and seeing women pamper themselves and how they focused on their outer beauty and look beautiful, I think part of my life, I just got focused on just wanting to tap into the inner part of us,” she said.


Cain also is the author of “Living a Poised Life.” The book focuses on inner beauty, healing transformation and self-love. Cain’s book chronicles the part that propelled her to the woman she is now. She wanted to write it to help motivate and inspire other women.

The name Poised Beauty came from Cain’s reading journal entries from a difficult time in her life. She realized during that time in her life, she remained Poised.

A self-described “Brow Icon,” Cain is a licensed cosmetologist who has been doing eyebrows for 20 years, and is the co-owner of TreLa Brows, located at 2724 N. Lincoln Ave., in Lincoln Park.

Coming from an entrepreneurial family, it was always in her to want to go into business for herself. When Cain’s mother passed in 2018, it pushed her to go after her dreams and step out on her own.

As a Black woman in the beauty industry, it has been great for Cain. She noticed, however, that people from other races get better opportunities in terms of corporate opportunities.

“Growing up under the tutelage of my aunt and saw her work hard and really be the matriarch of our family and pave the way for us, it’s just part of my blood,” she said.

Cain is excited to take her brand and her passion to the next level, living a life of doing what she loves.

Cain has seen the beauty industry change. When she started, brows weren’t a service a lot of people were getting. Now, it is a popular service women get often. Cain said that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty.

“You radiate what you attract, you attract what you radiate, you become who you are. I think that self-love determines your network, your net worth, and your self-worth.  You can only become the best version of yourself if you’re loving yourself,” she said.

Cain said the hottest fall trend is a good bold lip. Poise Beauty has 13 liquid matte shades, 9 satin finish crème shades and 3 lip gloss shades. Cain suggests a red or a burgundy.

“You always feel your best when you look your best. The right lipstick can empower you to be a boss. A pop of color helps bring out the whole outfit,” she said.

Every day, during Self Care Awareness Month, Cain has been posting positive affirmations on her Instagram Page, poisebeautylife. She wants women to take time out for themselves, pour into themselves first before they pour into other people. Women need to give to themselves; do something they love to do. She said it is important for them to do for themselves because a person can’t pour from an empty vessel.

Cain wants aspiring entrepreneurs to do their homework, make a plan, believe they can do it and they are worthy of it. Lastly, step out on faith.

“Know that if God gave you that vision, He’s going to provide everything you need to fulfill that vision. Do not be fearful, just step out on faith,” she said.
