Shore Community Services celebrates 70 years

BY TIA CAROL JONES
For more than 70 years, Shore Community Services, Inc. has been servicing people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
This year, Shore Community Services will celebrate the milestone with a series of events.
India Ehioba, CEO of Shore Community Services, said its goal is to provide whatever the people they service need to help them live as independently as possible, which includes job placement and training and housing assistance, as well as therapeutic services. She said, in one form or another, Shore services 300 families.
Ehioba said in the midst of COVID-19, Shore continued to provide services to those in residential care at the facility. “Last year, in March when this first came out, it was a scary time. Nursing homes were being hit hard. Group homes were right behind them. It did impact us, and we did lose several clients,” she said. “It affected us on a lot of levels but we still had to be the one to be there.”
Ehioba said it took a lot of sharing of information. She said while there was a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment, the community really stepped up. She said women in the community made masks that were distributed to staff. Ehioba served on the board of the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, an advocacy organization for disability organizations across the State.
Ehioba said Shore can be a source for people no matter where they are and can guide people to resources in their area. She said Shore knows the specialties of other organizations and can recommend them. She said Shore tries to stay abreast of what their peers are doing so that they can help refer families and individuals to the right resources.
