Copper Wellness provides positive healing environment

BY TIA CAROL JONES

Dr. Stephanie Madden is a licensed professional acupuncturist
and board-certified herbalist who has been practicing for five years. During that time, she built momentum and looked for other practitioners to work with.

This year, she was able to get the location she wanted for her own wellness clinic. Copper Wellness is located at 1654 W. North Ave., has been open for business since this past July.

In opening Copper Wellness, Madden looked at the type of environment she wanted to work in, and the kind of environment she desired for her patients to be in, the clinic environment is key to healing.

Copper Wellness offers acupuncture, cupping and Gua Sha, herbal medicine, chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy, massage therapy and FAR infrared sauna.

Madden started her own journey into wellness when she incurred workplace injuries while working a corporate level job. She was working too much, drinking too much and smoking cigarettes. She described it as the “normal life of doing too much.” She really needed to get right, so she went to see an acupuncturist.

That visit with the acupuncturist resulted in her taking a pause and she decided to look into Eastern Medicine. She found a practice that was holistic.

“It’s really about achieving goals for that person and, not achieving just a standard goal, of what they want to feel like, or what they want to be like, or what they want their life to be like, and I just thought that was so amazing,” she said.

Madden has always been interested in getting people out of their behaviors, so she started doing research. She found out that acupuncture could help people with addictive behavioral patterns, without the use of other drugs. Going into Eastern Medicine school, Madden discovered the multicultural aspects of the practice, people from different cultures bringing in their own healing properties. Madden recognized herbs from Jamaica that her grandmother used.

“It was just a whole melting pot of a way to use your own culture and also honor the Eastern culture to create a healing environment for patients,” she said.

Madden’s approach to her patient is to spend a lot of time with them, getting to know them, getting to know their body and what their body responds to, with an initial intake that takes multiple appointments. Once they have the kind of communication and the desire contact they want, then the treatment plan starts.

“You can’t really sit down with someone one time, no matter
how long the intake is, and really understand them. You really need to give it time, because how you are on Monday is not how you feel on a Friday,” she said.

Madden works with people that have chronic conditions, with a long-term treatment plan that typically takes six months to a year. The most popular service at Copper Wellness is acupuncture,
with chiropractic services coming in second. People who have chronic conditions tends to have a lot of pain. Holistic healing
to Madden is essential and there is no way around it.

“You can’t just treat one part of the body because there is no one
part of the body that is not connected,” she said. “Holistic medicine
is important because it assesses how we feel about how we feel.”

Madden has seen patients experiencing brain fog and nightmares, which were part of the COVID-19 pandemic. People were not going to the gym or seeing doctors during the pandemic. Madden had to hold space for people and help them relax. It was mitigating trauma from last year. Now, being able to manage the anxiety and stress, things are being normalized a little bit more.

“We made a point to create space where if they want to come
in for a one-on-one treatment with a practitioner, that’s available,
but also, if you want to spend time alone in a beautiful environment, that’s available too,” she said.
