Homeowners: Are you missing exemptions on your property tax bills?
Homeowners: Are you missing exemptions on your property tax bills?
Deadline approaching to receive adjusted property tax bills
Homeowners in Cook County have until September 11, 2020 to apply for missing property tax exemptions on their 2019 second-installment property tax bills. By meeting this deadline, homeowners can receive corrected property tax bills by mail before the October 1, 2020 deadline to pay without incurring penalties and interest.
How does a property owner know if they are missing an exemption?
Homeowners can look at the bottom left corner of the second-installment property tax bill, available at www.cookcountytreasurer.com, under the Tax Calculator section. If homeowners believe they are entitled to an exemption that is not listed, they can apply for a Certificate of Error by submitting an application and copies of supporting documentation online at cookcountyassessor.com, on paper, or in person. Please see the full list of property tax exemptions administered by our office at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.
If homeowners apply for Certificates of Error after September 11, 2020, they are responsible for paying the entirety of the second-installment tax bills to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office by October 1, 2020. If the Certificate of Error application is granted, a refund for the difference will be issued.
To further assist homeowners, the Cook County Assessor’s Office is hosting a virtual meeting on how to apply for a Certificate of Error on September 10, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. that can be accessed on Facebook and YouTube.
