STATE BOARD APPROVED IN PERSON SOCIAL DISTANCED DRIVE-THRU GRADE SCHOOL GRADUATION TO TAKE PLACE IN SOUTHLAND
Dean Barnett-President of the School District 152 1/2 Hazel Crest Board of Education along with District Superintendent Kenneth Spells- will be joined by a limited contingent of District Staff, School Personnel, Parents and Students; as they will facilitate the recently state approved in person social distanced Drive-Through 8th Grade Graduation.
Since the COVID-19 shut down of the state of Illinois the School District focused its attention in monitoring the Illinois State Board of Education’s anticipated plan that would afford the 8th grade graduates a public graduation. Amid the COVID-19 Virus, both sides sought the best scenarios to ensure the safety to all in attendance. From those discussions of a Drive-Thru approach to honoring graduates was selected.
“It has been disheartening to know that so many graduates within Illinois have been stripped of their dream of having a traditional graduation. But I’m grateful to the State Board of Education for authorizing this reasonable alternative.” says President Barnett.
The State approved guidelines for Drive-Through Graduations are as follows:
Drive-through: Students, and only their immediate family members who are staying at home together, should arrive in waves and leave after their individual recognition. Students may exit the car individually, in their cap and gown if available, to have a photo taken. These events will require precise scheduling, traffic control, and school safety personnel, etc. and may be appropriate for small to medium-sized graduating classes in less trafficked areas.
“Learning is not an easy process. These graduates have achieved much and deserved to be recognized in an official ceremony. I’m grateful that the School Board, the District Office, our School Administrations and the Illinois State Board worked together to accomplish this event.” says District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Spells.
