Auburn Gresham Distributor Announces Food Giveaway Plans to feed 4,000 families
Residents of Auburn Gresham are fighting for their lives on two fronts—against COVID-19 and food insecurity. The South Side community is among those hardest hit by the pandemic in Chicago. It also has one of the highest poverty rates in the city. This combination has made the mantra, “We’re all in this together,” more than just words, but a call to action.
El Rey USA Meats & Seafood, Inc., a local distributor, is heeding the call. The company is planning to donate a full load of poultry that will feed over 4,000 families in Marquette Park, 6700 S. Kedzie Ave., Saturday, May 16, 2020, from 9 a.m. – noon.
“These are hard times for everyone and El Rey USA would like to give back and help community members through the tough economic times that our city is experiencing,” says Daniel Leon, Sr., CEO of El Rey USA Meats & Seafood Inc.
El Rey USA is a food distribution company headquartered in Auburn Gresham, 2101 W. 74th Street, since 2002. The company reached out to 17th Ward Ald. David Moore to help get the word out about the food giveaway.
“This is a huge donation for community residents,” says Moore. “It’s an example of good corporate citizenship. We need more companies that are in a position to step up and lead by example.”
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Ald. Moore and El Rey USA are partnering for the food giveaway. All intend to be present as packages of poultry are handed to each vehicle. Recipients are encouraged to stay in their cars to adhere to the city’s social distancing requirements.
The CEO says this is the company’s way of expressing its gratitude to the many workers who are on the front lines of this pandemic. Company officials not only want to thank medical personnel, but also the many essential workers who are helping to keep the city working.
