HUNDREDS GATHERED THIS PAST SUNDAY IN MOUNT GREENWOOD TO CALL FOR A NEW PUBLIC POLICY ON POLICING IN AMERICA
HUNDREDS GATHERED RECENTLY IN MOUNT GREENWOOD TO CALL FOR A NEW PUBLIC POLICY ON POLICING IN AMERICA
Early Walker- Owner of Walker and McFarland Funeral Services- was recently joined by Bishop Larry Trotter, Publicist Sean Howard and Chicago Comedian Damon Williams as they led over 600 people in a march that designed to protect young black boys from police brutality.
“Clearly Mount Greenwood historically has been the home of racial prejudice, police brutality and racism. Although the stereotype doesn’t truly reflect every resident of Mt. Greenwood, the continued racist activities in the area sheds an ugly cloud over the area.” says Early Walker.
The men have called for a new public policy on policing.
Sean Howard announced to those in attendance the following:
“We are advocating establishing greater “transparency” and “accountability” to police forces by making a number of changes to how officers are trained, as well as how they conduct themselves during interactions with the public.
We want to revise federal statutes covering when police officers can be charged with using excessive force, and whether they can be sued for such behavior.
Current federal law states that police officers have to “willfully deprive” a person of their constitutional rights in order to be charged with wrongdoing, according to the Justice Department’s website.
We want to revise the federal standard from “willful” to “knowingly or with reckless disregard,” as well as altering the language covering when such illegal acts are found to have resulted in someone’s death.
Again, our goal today is to publicly advocate for a "New Policy on Policing in America"
*We want a nationwide ban on chokeholds
*We want a limit on “Qualified Immunity” for police officers
*We want to create a National Misconduct Registry on Police Officers.
*We want an end to the use of "No-knock Warrants" in drug cases.
*We want to make lynching a federal crime.
“Senator Kamala Harris has coalesced much of our concerns and recommendations into a bill she is sponsoring next week. But today we will begin the public relations campaign that is necessary for the entire U.S Congress to takes these matters seriously.” says Sean Howard
