Long-Standing South Suburban NonProfit Prepares To Host Fundraising Comedy Show
BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
The South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, a nonprofit organization providing addiction treatment services in Chicago’s south suburbs, will host its annual spring fundraising gala, Comedy for a Cause, on May 16 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Odyssey Golf Club in Tinley Park.
The South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable and effective chemical dependency treatment and rehabilitation.
“We have been providing consistent treatment and recovery services to Chicago, mostly the south suburban and northwest Indiana area, since 1967,” said Bradley Stein, director of marketing, media relations, business development, and a senior addiction counselor for the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. “The South Suburban Council has a multidisciplinary team and we have our own certified counselors, our own dietitians, psychiatrists, recovery coaches, registered nurses, and all of that.”
Some of the services offered at the organization include outpatient treatment services, residential treatment for addiction and a host of youth programs for children and young adults.
Before taking on a leadership role at the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Stein was an addict himself which makes him uniquely qualified to serve as a senior addiction counselor and as the director of marketing, media relations, and business development.
“I signed a contract with a pretty big company and they sent me on the road for about 15 years and I did really well but I picked up some bad habits and I found myself unemployed, homeless and needing help,” said Stein.
About 15 years ago, Stein sought out help from the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and said that it changed his life.
“Ever since then, I have been a huge advocate for alcoholism and recovery,” said Stein. “I’m no longer concerned with money, I’m more concerned with helping someone that is going through the stress and the rigors of addiction and wanting to improve their life. Recovery is possible and it shouldn’t be stigmatized. It’s something that you have to work for and that’s what I want to help people do.”
The upcoming Comedy for a Cause event will serve as a fundraiser for the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and will feature four professional comedians.
“After being in business for 52 years, we are starting to reach a point where our building and our structure needs some significant improvements,” said Stein. “We are throwing this big event to try and raise funds to keep our facility in shape so that we can serve our clients.”
