Walgreens Partners with Greater Than AIDS to Offer Free HIV Tests throughout Chicago for National HIV Testing Day
More than 20 Walgreens locations will provide free, confidential testing on Thursday June 27th
As part of National HIV Testing Day on Thursday June 27, Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS is partnering with community organizations across the Chicago area to provide free, confidential HIV testing in more than 20 Walgreens pharmacies. National HIV Testing Day is part of an ongoing effort by Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens to broaden the reach of HIV testing and information in non-traditional settings and help people understand the latest in HIV prevention, treatment and care.
According to the CDC, an estimated 1.1 million people nationwide are living with HIV. In 2017, nearly 24,000 individuals in Chicago were living with HIV, 15% of whom had not been diagnosed. In Chicago, Black men account for more than 50% of those diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. Despite progress – the number of new HIV diagnoses has fallen in recent years – the CDC estimates that 1 in 7 are unaware of their HIV status, underscoring the importance of easy access to testing within their communities.
On June 27, more than 20 Chicago area Walgreens locations in Chicago’s North, West and South Sides will offer free, confidential HIV testing between 10 AM and 7 PM. No appointment is necessary and results will be delivered on-site. Additionally, HIV-trained counselors will be on hand with information on prevention, early treatment, and PrEP, a medication that offers an effective means of protection for those testing negative for HIV.
In South Chicago, participating Walgreens locations include those in Douglas, Bronzeville, Chatham, South Shore, Auburn Park and Roseland. To find a location near you, please visit www.greaterthan.org/free-hiv-testing-walgreens-2019/.
