New South Side High School Opening This Fall, Hosts Community Hiring Event
BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
This fall, the new Englewood STEM High School will finally be open at 6835 S. Normal Ave. with Conrad Timbers-Ausar serving as principal. In order to prepare for the opening, Chicago Public Schools, along with Teamwork Englewood and Price Workforce Solutions, recently hosted a hiring event
for a variety of positions that will be available at the school.
The hiring event took place at 815 W. 63rd St. on the second floor and provided information about available jobs for security staff, substitute teachers, lunchroom staff, custodians, bus aids, safe passage workers, and special education classroom assistants.
“This is a brand new high school in Englewood and I’m really excited that there is already a lot of interest in the community about the new school. Being in alignment with Dr. Jackson’s vision about equity and access not only for students but for communities, we felt that it would be important to have an opportunity for people within the community to be informed and interviewed for different positions that they normally might not have access to,” said Principal Timbers-Ausar.
The new Englewood STEM High School will open this fall with just a freshman class to start. The incoming students will have a brand new stateof- the-art building that will include multipurpose educational spaces, an outdoor sports facility, and a school-based medical center for use by both students as well as community residents, according to Chicago Public Schools.
The school will start with a freshman class and add one grade each subsequent year until the building is fully serving grades nine through 12 which should be in the fall of 2022.
“We didn’t start the hiring fair until 10 a.m. but I noticed that people were getting there around 9 so they could prepare. We saw a lot of people that were very structured and everyone I spoke to had a resume and was very focused in on what they were looking to do and asked great questions. I was very happy with the turnout,” said Timbers-Ausar.
Students that attend Englewood STEM High School will have the opportunity to learn science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts and be exposed to STEM careers. The school is also partnering with Kennedy-King College, located nearby in Englewood, which will allow students to earn college credit while they are still in high school.
Even with the new building, the partnership with Kennedy-King, and the top-of-the-line STEM equipment that will be at the student’s fingertips, Timbers-Ausar said that community representation inside the school is critical for student success and for that reason he hosted the community hiring event.
“I think it’s very important for students to see representation not only from the community but just by having people in general that resemble them,” said Timbers-Ausar. “It’s important for our students to see that there is richness and greatness within their own community.”
