Illinois Governor Hosts Legislative Breakfast In The SouthLand

BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recently hosted a variety of elected officials, stakeholders, and citizens from Chicago’s south suburban region for a Legislative Breakfast at the Tinley Park Convention Center. During the event, Pritzker shared what he has been working on in Springfield that will benefit the area and renewed his commitment to Chicago’s Southland.

“During my campaign last year, I promised you that I wouldn’t forget the southland and I haven’t and I won’t. As we move forward, I hope you will look at the state government as an increasingly stable and steady partner in growing jobs and growing your local economies. I want to thank all of you for what you do to make the Southland Region such a wonderful place to raise a family, build a business, and to be an entrepreneur. I look forward to working with you all to achieve much more in the years to come,” said Pritzker.

Elected officials from the state, county, and local levels were all in attendance with an abundance of south suburban mayors and their staff members in the building as well, many of whom have been working with Pritzker on pushing forward an agenda that will bring economic development and jobs to the region.

Pritzker took the time to address the room and shared some of his accomplishments thus far and how he plans to impact the state and specifically the Southland region during his time as governor.

“We authorized a South Suburban casino that will bring in hospitality and entertainment dollars that have for too long gone to Indiana. We know that will bring jobs and tourism to this region,” said Pritzker.

Before the event, attendees were able to submit questions for the Governor to answer. One of the questions that came up was the possibility of a new airport in the south suburban region which many area legislators are in favor of.

“You may have noticed that we put into the capital plan a lot of money for new roadways that will lead to the land that would be the new airport, that helps to bring this project forward,” said Pritzker. “We need to make sure that when we have an airport, it is one that isn’t drawing business away from other airports but one that is drawing in new industries, new cargo, and new passengers.”

Overall, Pritzker shared that he is extremely proud of having passed a balanced budget for the state and plans to continue moving Illinois forward.

“We are transforming our state into one of the most forward-thinking, economically prosperous, and innovative states in the nation,” said Pritzker. “We passed a bipartisan and truly balanced budget for the first time in a very long time. You all know that we went a couple of years without a budget entirely and many more years before that where a budget was passed but not really balanced. We worked hard to make sure we were truly doing it the right way this year.”
