ComEd Receives National Recognition for Emergency Restoration on the East Coast and in Puerto Rico ComEd recognized with other Exelon utilities for assistance given to people in need during busy winter storm season

The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) recognized ComEd for its assistance efforts restoring service to homes and businesses following Winter Storm Riley, which hit the East Coast in March 2018, and for assistance provided to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island last September.

ComEd received an “Emergency Assistance Award” for providing support during the nor’easter, along with other Exelon companies Atlantic City Electric, BGE, PECO and Pepco, who were recognized with the “Emergency Recovery Award.” ComEd, and the rest of the Exelon utilities, including Delmarva Power, were also recognized for their work in Puerto Rico. The awards were presented at EEI’s Annual Convention held on June 6.

Winter Storm Riley caused extraordinary damage across the East Coast, leading to power interruptions for more than 1 million customers. More than 860 ComEd employees and contractors joined restoration efforts during the storm.

“It is an honor for ComEd to receive this award, which recognizes the tremendous work undertaken by our employees to support our sister companies in quickly and safely restoring customers affected by Winter Storm Riley,” said Terence R. Donnelly, ComEd president and COO. “I also can’t emphasize enough the pride we have in our teams who planned for and went to Puerto Rico. They improved the lives of thousands affected by the hurricanes.”

In Puerto Rico, 146 ComEd employees worked for nearly two months, with other Exelon companies, to restore power to more than 11,000 customers who had been without power for more than six months. During the seven-week deployment, the entire Exelon team of approximately 300 employees safely installed 376 poles, 267 transformers, and over 108 miles of conductor.

The Emergency Assistance Award is given to select EEI member companies to recognize their extraordinary efforts to assist local utilities as they work to restore power to customers after service disruptions caused by severe weather conditions or other natural events. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.
