Fallon Flowers Creates Nursing Inspired Program

By Christopher Shuttlesworth

Fallon Flowers founded NursingInspired, in 2017, a mentorship and educational program for ethnically underrepresented African American high school students and young adults who seek to pursue a higher education and career in nursing.

Flowers is currently working with several young adults that are taking their nursing prerequisites. Her goal is to guide them with individualized preparatory “care plans” in their nursing school applications as well as assists with group educational sessions.

“What if there were more nurses from our communities that could take their nursing knowledge and apply that in a community health aspect to build healthier communities,” she said. “If they take this information back to their families, neighbors and communities, then the neighborhoods will become healthier.”

Flowers continued to explain that she realized that NursingInspired would

help urban communities after teaching a one-week summer seminar called, “Nursing…Yesterday, Today and Your Tomorrow.” She said she visited a high school on the south side and saw there wasn’t a class for a nursing prerequisite program. This sparked the idea that there was a greater need for

youth to be exposed to the field of nursing.

“I saw there was a lack of African American students being exposed to this opportunity and being college prepared,” she said.“

There are 2,824,641 registered nurses in the U.S. and only 9.9% are African American, according to http://minoritynurse. com. Flowers’ future plans include collaborating with various African American youth organizations and schools throughout the Southside of Chicago, with the intent of exposing them to educational programs, events, nursing schools and organizations

in the area.

“Exposure is key and if you don’t have the exposure to nursing, how can you know that this is something that you want to do and succeed in?”

Flowers’ will hold an educational event during National Nurses Week 2018 on May 6, 2018.

Flowers graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in 2006 and received an Associate of Science (A.S.) from the City Colleges of Chicago in 2011. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Loyola University of Chicago (2013-2017).
