Upcoming Women’s History Month Performance Highlights Harriet Tubman

By Katherine Newman

South Suburban College has put together a free Woman’s History Month performance of The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman staring Cynthia Maddox. The performance will take place on March 1st at 11 a.m. in the Kindig Performing

Arts Center, 15800 S. State St., South Holland.

Patrice Burton, dean of student services at South Suburban College (SSC), was

involved with planning the event. The performance will provide the historical story of Harriet Tubman and showcase the many roles she played during the American Civil War, according to Burton.

“If we look at it from what she accomplished at the time she was a true ‘shero’. Not a hero a ‘shero’ because a lot of people don’t realize what all she did. Most people just know about Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad and that’s

it, but she was so much more,” said Burton.

Maddox is a Chicago actress, director, vocalist, playwright, and producer who has performed all over the Midwest and Canada. For thirty years Maddox has been portraying a wide range of African American ‘sheroes’ in her performances,

according to South Suburban College.

Burton booked Maddox to come and give her Harriet Tubman performance because she believed her one-woman act was enlightening and would benefit

the students and community.

“All we wanted to do was chose a strong woman and I think both black, white, and latino people can get from this women a source of strength because she was an abolitionist, she was a humanitarian, she was an armed scout and spy for

the United States Army during the American Civil War, she was an educator and regardless of her color I think that we as Americans need to know about

as many ‘sheroes’ as we can,” said Burton.

The upcoming performance is free and open to the public. For
