The mission of the Hyde Park Youth Symphony (HPYS) is to bring together diverse students from the South Side of Chicago and beyond to provide a high-quality orchestral performance experience as a training ground for the next generation of performers, educators, and advocates of music and the arts.

The program offers three different orchestras for students at varying levels of ability and experience. Rehearsing on Thursday evenings at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Chicago, the HPYS brings a racially and economically diverse group of young musicians together to increase their orchestral performance skills and gain a lifelong appreciation for music and each other. For more information about the Hyde Park Youth Symphony, visit www.thehpys. org or call (312) 525-9642.

The Hyde Park Youth Symphony (HPYS) was started in 1954 by Claire Oppenheim, well known Hyde Park piano teacher and sister of long-time Independent Hyde Park 5th Ward Alderman Leon Despres. What started out as a fledgling group of young musicians who

were primarily string players, is now a full-blown organization with three levels of musical instruction serving children on the Southside of Chicago. Both conductors are

expert music teachers and lead the practice sessions that are held after school.
