VILLAGE OF MATTESON MAYOR SUCCESSFULLY LURES SAM’S CLUB BACK TO MATTESON
Sheila Chalmers-Currin- Village President of Matteson, Illinois- is announcing the return of Sam’s Club back to the Village of Matteson.
Sam’s Club has agreed to develop it’s second world class Distribution and E-commerce Fulfillment Center in Matteson.
In January of this year the national corporation announced the closure of it’s Matteson retail store on Cicero Avenue. However, the Mayor ordered her administrators to revisit the issue with Sam’s Club representatives in effort to return the major corporation back to Matteson, Illinois. After many phone calls and on site visits, Village officials and Sam’s Club officials were able to reach an accord.
“It is no secret that my administration endured some inherited challenges concerning the closure of Big Box Chains. I made it my mission not only to attract new businesses, but to also recruit diverse models of economic development.” says Mayor Chalmers Currin.
The Distribution Center will be Sam’s Club’s second such development. Earlier this year the company opened its very first Distribution Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The development comes at a time of growth and investment in the company’s Omni-channel shopping experience. Recently the company announced free shipping on most items for it’s Plus members. In the first quarter of this year, Sam’s Club witnessed online sales increase of 25% in which they also saw a 5.2% comp sales increase (excluding fuel and tobacco).
Mayor Chalmers-Currin adds, “Though warehouse-based retailers such as Sam’s Club have a revenue stream fueled by member fees; they also have to adjust to an environment in which customers can buy groceries, electronics and other products from a growing array of e-commerce stores. All of which, makes today’s announcement of a new Sam’s Club Distribution E-Commerce Fulfillment Center here in Matteson a significant step forward.”
Specifics of the development include, but are not limited to:
Repurposing of an existing Sam’s Club Store to create the 2nd E-Commerce Fulfillment Center in the United States (first center opened earlier this year in Memphis, Tennessee) 70 jobs at the completion of the center and 140 jobs during the peak season
Commitment of local hiring with a minimum of 50% of the proposed jobs Expected to open prior to the end of the 2018 calendar year.
