Free Event Brings Soulful Artists And Activities To Hyde Park
BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
The Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave., is hosting their Soul Saturday event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m on Aug. 4 where attendees will be able to experience the Black Mental Wellness Expo, resident artists, a plant exchange, the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project, and several other family-friendly activities.
The Hyde Park Art Center is a contemporary arts center on the south side of Chicago that also serves as a meeting place for artists and community members where they can cultivate ideas, impact social change, and connect with new networks. The Art Center is open seven days a week and is free to visit every day, including Soul Saturday.
“There are multiple things for you to do on Soul Saturday along with looking at art and engaging in a studio class. This Soul Saturday is focusing on the Black Mental Wellness Expo,” said Ariel Gentalen, Residency and Public Programs Manager at the Hyde Park Art Center. “There will be like 30 booths and a whole day of programming for people to engage with in our library and meeting rooms.”
Soulfulness is something that is consistently woven into the programming at the Hyde Park Art Center. The staff and artists not only hope to provide a valuable experience for art enthusiasts, but they also work hard every day to make sure all of the exhibits, classes, and events are positive and uplifting for everyone involved.
“Soul is definitely something that we think a lot about at the Art Center. This is a really difficult time in the world and we are a place where people come to look at art, to make with their hands, to talk to community members, to see friends, and to see artists. It’s a place that we try to keep good energy going and this event is just an extension of that,” said Gentalen.
The event is family friendly and intergenerational, according to Gentalen. Along with the Black Mental Wellness Expo, there will be a plant exchange from Cream Co. who will be giving away upwards of 100 small plants and the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project will be on site with their traveling exhibit that features a massive collection of digital and physical sketchbooks.
The Hyde Park Art Center staff along with many resident artists will all be present at the event to meet with visitors to answer questions and lead art activities.
“We hope that if you decide to join us and engage with one of the activities or all of them that you’ll just want to come back and see us again and think of the Art Center as a place to come for these kinds of things and know that we are here as not only an artistic resource but also as a community resource and a meeting place,” said Gentalen.
