PULLMAN PORTER MUSEUM PART OF THE NATIONWIDE MUSEUM DAY LIVE EVENT!

Smithsonian magazine’s 13th Annual Museum Day Live! reaches Chicago Free Admission on September 23, 2017, with a downloadable ticket

The National APR Pullman Porter Museum will open its doors free of charge on Saturday September 23, 2017, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s thirteenth annual Museum Day Live! This national initiative is a chance for museums across the United States to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities, which offer free admission every day.

Those who want to visit The National APR Pullman Porter Museum on September 23, need only download a Museum Day Live! Ticket at Smithsonian.com/museumday. That ticket will give your free entrance for two at participating venues on September 23, 2017. One ticket per email address is permitted. This year’s event is expected to attract more than last year’s day when more than 200,000 people downloaded museum tickets.

For the Pullman Porter Museum, this Museum Day Live! comes at a special time as it recently launched an ambitious, national search to complete its historic registry of African American railroad employees. The museum is hoping to find and document 20,000 living descendants of the men and women who worked on the railroad between 1869 and 1969 during the golden era of railroad travel. The registry is expected to serve as a definitive resource for people to better understand the legacy that these men and woman left.

“These men and women not only helped build the Pullman empire,” said Dr. Lyn Hughes, the Pullman Porter Museum founder. “They also helped build the Black Middle Class and that is too often forgotten.” David Peterson Jr., the museum’s president and executive director said,: “This will be a great gift to the whole country. We want to find and connect with the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other descendants of the African-American railroad employees, utilizing today’s technology.”

The Pullman Porter Museum: The 22-year-old NAPRPPM, 10406 S. Maryland Ave, is the only museum in the nation exclusively honoring the Pullman Porters’ history. It is located in U.S. Department of Interior’s Pullman National Monument District, Chicago’s first National Park Service site, created in 2015 by President Barack Obama. Museum Day Live hours 11:00 to 3:30 p.m.
