Senator Robin Kelly Hosts Annual Hiring Event
CONGRESSWOMAN ROBIN KELLY PLANS TO HOST ANNUAL HIRING FAIR
By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Congresswoman Robin Kelly will host her 5th Annual Hiring Event for jobseekers in the 2nd Congressional District on Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the gymnasium of South Suburban College, located 15800 State St., South Holland.
In 2016, more than 400 job-seekers met with more than 85 employers with active job openings, according to a Congresswoman Robin Kelly press release.
Kelly explained that the desire for the hiring event arose when she took office four and a half years ago and saw that her district had a high unemployment rate. She said ultimately, the hiring event became one of the tools she decided to use to help people get back to working.
“No matter who you are, you want basic needs like a roof over your head, healthcare, good education for your children and work,” Kelly said. “Most people want a job and we wanted to help give them that opportunity.”
She continued to say that the hiring event helps the overall quality of life for the people in her district and her constituents as well.
“Nothing stops a bullet like an opportunity because that opportunity might be a job or a mentor or new skill,” Kelly said.
Companies and agencies participating in this year’s Hiring Event include UPS, ComEd, Metra Rail, Comcast, the CTA, the U.S. Post Office, MiJack, Franciscan Health, Lakeside Metals, and the Cook County Sheriff ’s Department.
Prior to the Hiring Event, Kelly will also sponsor a free Job Readiness Workshop on Oct. 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Community Room of the Calumet City Public Library, located at 660
S. Manistee Avenue, Calumet City, according to a Congresswoman Robin Kelly press release.
Instructors from the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership will teach job-seekers how to prepare a resume and develop quality interview skills.
