CHICAGO – In partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA), Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI) has announced the selection of the architecture, site design, and engineering

team for the Pullman National Monument Visitor Center at 111th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.

Following an extensive selection process, two Chicago-based firms were chosen to lead the project. Bauer Latoza Studio, an architecture firm nationally recognized for historic restoration and hospitality design, will craft the blueprint for the new Visitor Center. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, an international leader in the design of high-performance architecture in a wide range of typology and scale, was selected for the Visitor Center’s site

design. Other consultants to the teams include Site Design, SPACECO, Inc., DAI Environmental, and CKL Engineers, LLC, a

civil engineering consulting company that performs sustainable construction and consulting services.

“We have selected an exceptionally well-qualified and diverse team of experts to do more than just rehabilitate and adapt the iconic Clock Tower,” said David Doig, President of CNI. “Our goal is to create a place that supports the NPS

mission, shares Pullman’s important stories with more people and fosters additional opportunities to improve the quality of life for people in the community and the Chicagoland region.”

CNI has entered into a Partnership Design and Construction

Agreement with the NPS to develop the Visitor Center in the historic Administration Clock Tower building, historically the heart of the Pullman factory and town. Once completed, the Visitor Center will be both an interpretive center for the National Monument and house NPS operations.

“The NPS and the National Park Foundation, the project funder, are thrilled to be moving forward with plans for the adaptive reuse of the historic Clock Tower Building,” said

Kathleen Schneider, the Superintendent of Pullman National Monument. “The Visitor Center, to be located in the first floor of the Clock Tower, will become the heartbeat of the community and primary entry point for many of our Pullman visitors. Once we have introduced the visitors to the nationally

significant Pullman stories, we will encourage them to explore the community and visit the other important visitor destinations in the Monument, including the National A. Philip

Randolph Pullman Porter Museum and the Historic Pullman Foundation Visitor Center.”

Since the 203-acre Pullman National Monument was established in February 2015, a Whole Foods distribution center has relocated from Indiana to Pullman where the

company is constructing a new 140,000 square foot facility that will bring with it 150 new jobs when completed in 2018. Other new CNI developments in the works include the

Pullman Community Center, a new yearround recreational center o’ering athletic programs and activities for people of all ages; Pullman Artspace, an innovative work/live

space and the first new multi-family housing development to be constructed in the community in decades; and

several new retail and a’ordable housing opportunities to serve the neighborhood’s growing population.

people to Pullman,” said Mae Whiteside, owner of CKL Engineers, LLC, and a resident of the community. “And I’m honored to be selected to work on the Visitor Center because it is another major step forward for generating an economic development opportunity that will positively impact the lives of my neighbors and the entire city.”
