NEW ORLEANS HOSTS 2017 ESSENCE FESTIVAL

Since the 1994 Essence Festival, the event has been known for showcasing leaders in the music industry coupled with empowering messages along with meaningful and spirited community activities. The 2017 Essence Festival is no

different and is se t to take place in New Orleans on June 29th through July 3, where people of all ages and backgrounds will receive an opportunity to see their favorite artists and influential speakers across the world.

Friday’s starting lineup will include: Diana Ross, John Legend, India Arie, PJ Morton and Kelly Price, according to essence.com. The following night, there will be a special performance by Chaka Chan, and Jill Scott along with Monica will lead the way and set the crowd up for new artists such as Teyana Taylor and

Jhene Aiko. Capping off the showcase will be influential rap artists like Chance The Rapper, BJ the Chicago Kid, Master P, Solange, Chloe x Halle, XSCAPE and more.

Other events and activities that will take place during the Essence Festival will include a “free daytime experience at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center,” according to Essence. The Empowerment Experience will

allow individuals to listen to influential speakers like Iyanla Vanzant, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Ava DuVernay, elaborate and inspire in areas of beauty, style,

entrepreneurship and more.

In addition, the Essence Festival will host a celebrity basketball game at Xavier University of Louisiana Convocation Center, and the game will be navigated by Team Hope NOLA, which is a foundation started by Hip Hop Mogul Master P,” according to an essence press release.

Master P said the purpose of the celebrity game, which will include notable names like Trey Songz, Ray J, Terrence J, Romeo Miller, Ben Gordon and Caron Butler, is to raise money for less fortunate children who are trying to survive the streets in New Orleans.

“It is extremely important to be able to help the young people from my hometown – these children are challenged with so much,” Master P stated in an Essence press release.

According to a 2017 essence press release, individuals can now go on Essence.com to “purchase tickets starting at $25.00 for General admission and
