JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow has authorized a $10,000 contribution to United Way of Will County as part of his ongoing fight to end the heroin epidemic that has gripped our region and the entire Nation.
State’s Attorney Glasgow recently forwarded the $10,000 payment to United Way with the intent that it be directed equally to the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and Stepping Stones, Inc. Both of these agencies are United Way partners and have been providing crucial treatment and resources to those who are struggling with heroin addiction.
“We have reached a crossroads when it comes to dealing with the opioid/heroin epidemic we are facing in Will County,” the State’s Attorney said. “This is no longer just another controlled substance; it is also a deadly poison.”
He continued: “With the number of confirmed fatal overdoses in Will County skyrocketing to 96 last year – an increase we experienced even with the expanded placement of life-saving NARCAN into the hands of first responders – it is critical that we use all available resources to eliminate this public health crisis.”
Michael Hennessy, United Way of Will County President and CEO, stated: “Our United Way of Will County is so grateful to Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow for his kind and most generous support of our work. The funds contributed will be used to provide treatment and preventive services to help those who are struggling with heroin addiction.”
It is important to note that the State’s Attorney utilized no taxpayer dollars in making this contribution to United Way. Instead, he used money he seized from criminals who were engaged in the sale of illegal narcotics in Will County.
“I can think of no more appropriate use for such money than to stop the illegal drug trade by helping people kick their addiction to this deadly poison,” he said.
