Grants Available for Neighborhood-Based,
Antiviolence Summer Programs in Chicago
Chicago, IL – The application period is open for the 2017 Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities, an initiative
that awards grants of $1,000 to $10,000 to qualified community-based organizations.
The Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities seeks to support programs in 17 targeted communities that are designed to promote peace, build trust and strengthen
relationships among neighborhood residents across ages. The Fund’s application process is very simple and grants will be awarded quickly, according to Deborah E. Bennett, the Fund’s advisory committee chairperson and a senior program officer at the Polk Bros. Foundation.
“We know that there are people in neighborhoods who are running powerful programs that are bringing residents together, providing secure spaces and creating the sense
of connectedness needed to make our communities safe,” said Bennett. “We want to support these on-the-ground
actions.”
To apply, organizations must prepare a short proposal and budget, and have 501(c)3 nonprofit status or partner with an organization that has that status. The grant application and
helpful preparation tips are available at www.safeandpeacefulchi.com. The application deadline is May 4, 2017.
Grant awards will be announced on May 17, 2017, and funds distributed on May 25, 2017. All activities related to the grants must be completed by October 31, 2017.
An in-person technical assistance session for potential applicants will be available. Information is available on the website; special accommodations for these sessions can be provided as needed.
Seventeen communities were prioritized for support based on data compiled by the University of Chicago Crime Lab for highest number and rate of homicides: Austin, Auburn Gresham, Chatham, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Garfield Park, Washington Park, Greater Grand Crossing, Humboldt Park, South Shore, Lower West Side (Pilsen),
New City (Back of the Yards), North Lawndale, Roseland, South Chicago and South Lawndale (Little Village).
The Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities was launched in 2016 by the Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities, a coalition of philanthropic organizations that
administers its funding. The Fund was created to proactively plan for the potential of a spike in violence in Chicago during summer months and exists to support activities by nonprofit organizations that build community cohesion and promote
safety and peace. Donors to this Fund include philanthropic institutions that are also engaged in larger, long-term efforts to help address the problem of violence prevention and community safety.
A technical assistance session scheduled is scheduled for:
