Trials and Trails is presented as part of the Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks series, supported by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Arts programming in neighborhoods across the city advances the goals of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Cultural Plan. Now in its fourth year, the 2016 Night Out in the Parks series will host over 1,000 cultural events and programs at more than 250 neighborhood parks throughout the city, making community parks a safe haven and hubs of activity. Projects will vary from traditional performances and concerts, to movies, peace rallies, community workshops, nature based programs, dance pieces, festivals, and more. The Chicago Park District has partnered with more than 120 arts and community organizations to expand and produce this successful initiative. Trials and Trails: A part of the Cowboys and Vikings Trilogy
The Cowboys and Vikings Trilogy is a series of multimedia performances that brings into question the contemporary reinvention of historic events such as westward expansion, economic development and industrialization. Trials and Trails incorporates large scale video projections, dance, live music, and storytelling. The figures of the “Cowboy” and the “Viking” are dissected and re-purposed to challenge societal assumptions about contemporary ideas of masculinity.
Erica Mott Productions chose to present this work at the Steelworkers park because of it’s rich history of labor and production and the diverse communities that shaped the development of the Calumet region. Trials and Trails will be performed in the remaining rubble of the U.S Steelwork Iron Ore yard, where the steel that was used to build Chicago’s skyscrapers and railways was manufactured for over 100 years.
This performance encourages dialogue around the contemporary reinvention of economy and environment in the post-industrial age so clearly represented by the Calumet region.
All performances are free and open to the public. No ticket required.
