South Suburban College Offers Nurse Assistant Training Program

South Suburban College will host an Open House for the Basic Nurse Assistant Training (BNATP) program on Monday, October 31th from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in the Atrium at the college’s main campus a BANTP, according to a press release. Alisia Hill, Coordinator for the BNAPT at South Suburban College, explained what the program involves. She said, “Once the eight-week BNAPT program is complete, the student becomes a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

This program has been offered here at South Suburban College over the last six years. After the program, students will receive a certificate, and to practice CNA work, they must take a state test. When the students successfully passes the state exam, they will be eligible to work in the state of Illinois.”

According to the BNAPT press release, the Nurse Assistant Training program is six (6) credit hours and students pay the current cost for each credit hour, along with a lab fee. The lab fee cost is $125.00, which includes the Illinois Nurse Aide Competency Examination (INACE). All certified nursing assistant applicants must complete a Livescan fingerprint background check, submit a health physical form, proof of current health insurance and CPR card.

Hill said, “Because the baby boomers are getting older, there is a demand for CNA workers across the healthcare industry. Whether its home health, nursing care facilities or hospitals, a lot of job seekers are not choosing healthcare as a career option, however, there is still a high demand for this rewarding profession of nursing.”

Under the direction of registered nurses, CNA duties include aiding patients in getting in and out of bed, walking, performing range-of-motion exercises, and bed bathing, among others, according to the Morraine Valley Community College Nursing Assistant website.

Hill said, “We need qualified nurses with a caring personality to take care of the general population. There are a lot of people who are institutionalized and they do need assistance with activities of daily living, such as grooming, bathing, eating and dressing.”

To qualify for the South Suburban BNATP program, applicants must be at least 17-years of age and have eight years of education. They also must have a reading score of 081 or above and submit to a Livescan Fingerprint Background Check, according to the BNATP press release. In addition, applicants must also submit proof of current health insurance coverage, a completed physical health form, and a CPR card.

According to the South Suburban BNATP website, classes are set to meet at the Oak Forest Center, Monday through Thursday mornings. The instructional design includes an indepth review of basic nursing skills through lecture, training in the campus laboratory and supervised clinical experiences at a long-term health care facility.
