Howard Alumni Club to Host Annual ‘Reconnection of HBCUs’ Softball Tournament
The Howard University Club of Chicago (HUACC) will host its 5th Annual Reconnection of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Softball Tournament on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Washington Park: 5331 S. Martin Luther King Drive. The tournament will begin at noon, and will also include a Health Fair featuring free health screenings by Walgreens.
Since the tournament’s inception five years ago as the brainchild of current HUACC president, Danielle James, it has grown tremendously. “In 2011, we started out with the goal of uniting siloed groups of Historically Black College and University alumni under the common bond of fellowship, we only had two teams participating,” James said. She added, “This year, we are excited to report that thus far, we have several teams participating, and that number will grow as we still have other alumni groups that are coordinating their teams and will register.” For more information about registering a team or volunteering, email HUACCBison@gmail.com.
Alumni teams include Clark Atlanta University, Jackson State University, Langston University, Tennessee State University, Texas Southern University, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Howard University.
“The Howard University Alumni Club of Chicago looks forward to an opportunity to dig in our cleats and fellowship with Howard University alumni and other local alumni chapters, our mission of solidarity among Historically Black Colleges and Universities, their alumni and the City of Chicago,” James commented.
In the five years that HUACC has hosted this tournament, it has grown tremendously. In 2011, we started with only two HBCU Alumni Chapter teams. There are 107 HBCU’s in existence and the majority have committed to be on hand in this year’s tournament. This is a fun-filled “Family in the Park” Day in the spirit of the HBCU Class Reunion. There will be tailgating, vendor booths and recruiters who will be on hand to meet with students and their families. This year’s Reconnection of HBCUs Softball Tournament will serve as the kick-off event for the 19th Annual Chicago Football Classic, which will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Soldier Field.
Several Chicago aldermen are showing their support of this event that continues to promote family unity and higher education. Keep up with HUACC on Facebook: Howard University Alumni Club of Chicago and follow HUACC on Instagram: HUACCChicago.
