Chicago’s Largest Community Faith-Based Breakfast Held
Former Chicago Commissioner Dr. Mildred Harris and God First Church and Ministries led a prayer over the City of Chicago’s police and municipality leaders with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Superintendent Eddie Johnson at a sold out, 2,000 attendee community breakfast on Saturday, May 21 at the Hilton Chicago Hotel.
The event was influenced by the rise of violence in the City of Chicago. The most notorious case noted was the murder of nine-year old Tyshawn Lee, who was executed by rival gang members on the south side.
Invited elected officials and speakers in attendance included Governor Bruce Rauner, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Mayor Emanuel, and several distinguished clergy and community leaders such as Rev. Clay Evans and Bishop William Hudson, III.
The event also highlighted the accolades of those making a difference in their community by presenting them with the Distinguished Leadership Award. Recipients included Leon Walker, Esq., Sgt. Yolanda Irvin, Pastor Olivia Johnson, and 17th Ward Alderman David Moore amongst many others.
Mayor Emanuel delivered a powerful speech to the crowd. He stated, “Parents, principles, pastors, public officials and police officers are the five Ps of influence in our community. If you put those five Ps together to work collectively, we’ll have public safety in every part of this city.”
Dr. Harris, the founder, and CEO of God First Church and Ministries serves under a decree from God to pray for leaders and feed those who are disadvantaged. She has fed thousands of people over the last 32 years and has given more than $100,000 to support the community and provide scholarships to students and school programs throughout the city.
