GARTH CONSTRUCTION RECEIVES HIGH HONOR
The Chicago Department of transportation has selected Garth
Construction Services, Corp. as the Outstanding Minority
Contractor of the Year for their work installing precast, granite
and limestone elements as part of the the Chicago Riverwalk
Project.
The project created a continuous pedestrian path
along the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago RIver
from M ichigan Avenue to Lake Street. The United States
Congress redefined the navigational channel to permit a 25’ build
out between each bridge and a 20’ buildout under each bridge.
The project is divided into three “rooms” which included granite
and precast concrete paving, precast seating elements, granite
and precast landscaping walls and a limestone facade on existing
walls. In the Jetty piers were constructed and covered with pre
cast pavers including a complicated precast edge detail that
required coordination between Garth Construction Services and
multiple other trades. The Water Plaza includes on allseason
favorite clad in granite.
One of the biggest challenges in constructing this project is site
access and storage. Restrictions on land closures on Wacker
Drive further complicated access and limited the contractor’s use
of heavy equipment for installation of precast and granite
elements. Work was often performed during offpeak hours in an
effort to keep the project on schedule. In addition, to the access
challenges, the project required significant coordination across
trades. Many of the precast and granite elements for lighting, rail
ing and other miscellaneous finish items that had to be coordinat
ed with the paver, wall and bench installation. The focus of the
Riverwalk design is an aesthetics an creating an environment that
connects users with the River. Garth Services Corporation, Corp.
provide a product that exceeded the design expectations for aes
thetics.
CDOT would like to thank Garth construction Services
for their professional approach in successfully completing their
work to this complex project and keeping the project on schedule
with minimal disruptions.
