The Betty Shabazz International Academy Charter School
recently hosted “Giving Tuesday.”
Giving Tuesday is hosted the following Tuesday after
Thanksgiving as a means to raise funds for its
Super Arts Project. “This is our second year on “Giving
Tuesday.” Although the funds raised last year
wasn’t all what we had hoped for, but for this
year we had chosen to fund our Super Ar ts
program,” Rika Lee, Chief Operating Officer
for Betty Shabazz Academy.
“The Arts program is an initiative that
our former and late music teacher Ann
Ward, who was renown singer and artist
[started]. She was with us for 18 years. She
just made her transition in July of this year.
This was a program that she started that
engaged children in the arts. This program is
offered to children who exemplify academic
excellence, good behavior, and it’s like a rewards
system,” Lee said.
“In the arts program, we engage the students
in African drumming and African dance. The
new teacher has added vocal ensemble,” Lee said.
According to Lee, the Super Arts program
raised over $1,500 for Giving Tuesday. Lee
added that funds raised will go towards
instruments and other expenses related to the
arts program.
