Ill. Dept. of Corrections Graduates First Class of Cadets in 2015
The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) graduated more than 130 new recruits for its first cadet class of 2015.
The new correctional officers finished a six-week, 240-hour Security Training Program on February 13th. During training, the cadets participated in intensive instruction courses that include search procedures, control tactics, fire emergency, discipline, drug awareness, employee ethics, professionalism, report writing, radio communication, and how to use a firearm.
According to the IDOC website, cadets are awarded certificates and badges and sworn to the Oath of Office.
IDOC Director S.A. Godinez recognized the cadets’ accomplishments in a ceremony on February 13th at the Cadet Training Facility in Springfield. In his remarks to cadets, Godinez acknowledged the importance of attaining leadership qualities of integrity, responsibility, accountability and character to meet the responsibilities of the agency and achieve a successful and fulfilling career.
“IDOC Training Academy continues to perform an excellent job in preparing new frontline staff to support the agency’s mission of operating a safe and secure prison system for the state of Illinois,” said IDOC Director S. A. “Tony” Godinez. “Through its comprehensive training program, the academy emphasizes professionalism, accountability and the highest ethical standards. We welcome having these new cadets join our professional staff and we look forward to carrying out the department’s mission of excellence under the support and leadership of Governor Rauner.”
The ceremony marks the 292nd IDOC cadet graduation since the creation of the IDOC Training Academy in 1974, bringing the total number of graduates to 26,135.
IDOC is committed to operating a safe and secure prison system, enhancing prison-based treatment and prevention programs and the successful reentry of inmates into society. The agency operates 25 correctional centers in addition to adult transitions centers, work camps and boot camps throughout the state.
The Training Academy provides quality, state-of-the-art training and incorporates technology and reality based exercises into its curriculum.
Additionally, the academy provides Training in the areas of firearms, crisis intervention, hostage negotiations, administration of discipline, critical incident, command post, and the Prison Rape Elimination Act and instructional method.
The academy also streamlines certain annual mandatory training by offering online courses to better accommodate the department’s busy front line and support staff.
The IDOC Training Academy is located on the grounds of the agency’s headquarters in Springfield, Ill. The academy offers regional training sites located at Pontiac Correctional Center in Pontiac, Ill., for northern region training and on the campus of John A. Logan Community College in Marion, Ill., for southern region training. The academy also provides training where needed at prisons across the state.
