Statewide Program to Provide Special Library Services to Individuals with Autism

Recently, Ill. Sec. of State Jesse White and The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP) launched “Targeting Autism,” designed to address the support needs of Illinois residents with autism. The program encourages libraries throughout the state to work in conjunction with TAP. White also serves as State Librarian.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that the prevalence of autism in the United States is one in 88 children. The CDC reports that the prevalence rate for autism in African Americans is one in 98.

Sec. of State Jesse White has partnered with The Autism Program of Illinois (TAP) to launch an initiative to assist individuals with autism throughout the state.

“Empowering libraries to better serve those with autism requires this type of collaborative effort,” said White. “Individuals with autism are often misunderstood and challenged to find welcoming, supportive environments to alleviate social isolation and help them achieve their full potential. I look forward to working with the autism community to expand available services at our libraries.”

The “Targeting Autism” program will host two forums this year in Springfield on March 4th and 5th and Sept. 3rd and 4th. The forums will bring together national and regional autism experts and advocates to establish a strong network of libraries and community to improve the quality of life for all touched by autism.

“Secretary White has partnered with TAP in the past and we look forward to this opportunity to work together to provide services to help those who have or are caring for someone with autism,” said Russell Bonanno, TAP Program Manager. “We are honored to be able to play a role in this exciting and important initiative.”

According to its website, TAP is the largest statewide autism resource and service network in the nation with a collaboration of 17 agencies operating at 19 centers across the state to provide services to children, families, educators, day care providers, and medical professionals.

“Targeting Autism” is supported by a grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). To learn more about “Targeting Autism” visit http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/libraries/targeting-autism.html.
