Flossmoor Metra Station Gets $4 Mil. Facelift
The busy Flossmoor, Ill. Metra station got a $4 million facelift, one of several renovations in the last couple of years the rail line has initiated.
Last month, Metra officials dedicated the Flossmoor stop by unveiling a new platform and new warming house at Flossmoor Road and Sterling Avenue.
The platform, where nearly 60 train stops are made each weekday, was in dire need of repair, according to Metra officials.
“I am pleased to be able to dedicate this rebuilt station, which will serve as a new and much more attractive gateway to our system and to the community of Flossmoor,” said Metra CEO Don Orseno. “We hope our Flossmoor riders will enjoy using this station for many years to come.”
At the ground breaking ceremony, Orseno was joined by Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun, Ill. State Rep. Anthony DeLuca and Metra board members Don De Graff, Romaynbe Brown and Norman Carlson.
“We are very happy that Metra renovated this station,” said Kimberly Richardson, assistant to Flossmoor Village Manager Bridgett Wachtel. “It definitely added to the character of our town.”
The concrete foundation, as well as the north and south head wall were replaced.
Other work in the project:
A renovated elevator.
A new platform lighting system.
A new stairwell on the northeast side of the depot.
Repaired concrete columns on the southeast side of the station and on the northeast side of the bridge.
The project was mostly funded with proceeds from Metra’s share of the Illinois state bond program. Flossmoor provided money to cover costs of decorative light fixtures on the platform.
In 2014, nearly $2 million in beautification and repair work was performed at 59 Metra stations with nearly $1 million allocated to projects at 18 stations on the Metra Electric Line. The renovations included work in Chicago at 18th Street, 63rd Street, 75th Street (Grand Crossing), 91st (Chesterfield) and in Burr Oak, Ill. and Richton Park, Ill.
Other work was at 16 stations on the Metra’s Milwaukee West Line, 10 stations Metra’s Milwaukee North Line, 10 stations on the Rock Island Line, three stations on the Heritage Corrido and one station on the North Central Service and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
