Flossmoor Metra Station Renovations Completed
Renovation of the Flossmoor Metra Station on Metra’s Electric District Line is complete. Metra and Flossmoor officials held a completion ceremony for the newly reconstructed, $4 million platform and related facilities on June 26.
“I am pleased to be able to dedicate this rebuilt station, which will serve as a new and much more attractive gateway to our system and to the community of Flossmoor,” said Metra CEO Don Orseno. “We hope our Flossmoor riders will enjoy using this station for many years to come.”
The project replaced the existing platform, the concrete foundation as well as the north and south head house walls.
Renovation work also included a new warming house, a renovated elevator, new LED platform lighting designed to match the village’s existing street lights, replacement of the existing accessible ramp, stair, and trench drain on the northwest side of the tunnel and all of the trench drain inside the tunnel, repairs to the concrete bridge columns on the south side of the station, new retaining walls on the southwest side of the station and on the northwest side of Flossmoor Road and a new stairway for the northeast side of the depot.
The station serves more than 800 riders each weekday on the Metra Electric Line, which runs between University Park and Millennium Station in downtown Chicago.
Located at Flossmoor and Sterling Roads, the station is on a solid-fill elevated structure and consists of a 1906-built Illinois Central Railroad building next to one island platform which serves the Metra Electric Line's two tracks.
There is no ticket agent at Flossmoor, but tickets may be purchased from a vending machine in the waiting room.
The old station house is used as a local restaurant and beer brewery, and contains an ice cream shop that operates out of a former Illinois Central Railroad caboose.
The Metra renovation project was funded primarily with proceeds from Metra’s share of the state bond program. Flossmoor provided funding to cover the costs of the decorative light fixtures on the platform.
