After requests from activists and several officials, the U.S. Justice Department plans to launch an investigation into the practices of the Chicago Police Department, officials said.U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch is expected to make an official announcement about the investigation later this week, according to news reports.

The department is currently investigating the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald, an African American teen. The new probe would review overall practices of the city's police department.

For the last couple of weeks, including Sunday, activists have called for the police department to be independently investigated.

On Sunday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st Dist.), along with several other officials, protested against the department in a march on State Street in Chicago’s downtown.

Last week, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan asked the Department of Justice for an investigation into the practices of the Chicago Police Department.
