Ill. Republican gubernatorial candidate, Bruce Rauner, visited the bus/train terminal at 95th & the Dan Ryan during the early morning rush hour on Sept. 15, where he wished commuters “good morning” and encouraged them to vote on election day, as part of a daylong campaign route on that crisscrossed Chicago’s south and west side communities.

While at the terminal, Rauner discussed his views on education, working with the African American community on socio-economic and job creation.

In a brief conversation with the Chicago Citizen Newspaper, Rauner stressed how he and his wife, Diana, are champions of education reform.

Ill. Gov. Pat Quinn, through the Parks and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) program, a provision under the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program that has $50 million dollars in available capital, recently announced the investment of three million dollars in capital funds to the renovation and development of three Chicago Park District field houses on September 13.

“I want to reform state education,” said Rauner. “[The] funding formula right now from the State government is insufficient and it’s not fair and it doesn’t support our schools strongly enough. I’ll make sure that the schools have enough money and I’ll make sure that every parent has the opportunity to choose the best school for their child.”

Rauner also suggested a voucher program to assist parents with their student’s education as a possibility.

Before crossing from the west side of the terminal to speak with unassuming bystanders as they waited on their buses, Rauner responded to questions as to how he plans to be transparent and honor his commitments to the African Americans community.

“We want African American leaders to be part of our administration and we want to have policies that enable every family here, African American families, and every family to have a real shot at the American Dream,” said Rauner. “We’re going to make sure that we have a booming economy with jobs in every community, not just some. I’m going to come up with programs to get financing to African American entrepreneurs so they can build businesses in African American communities so our young people don’t have to commute for hours on end to get to decent jobs.”

Rauner then engaged in casual conversations, smiles, and thumbs-up with commuters before boarding his campaign bus.

Meanwhile, Rauner’s gubernatorial opponent, Ill. Gov. Pat Quinn, recently announced a three million dollar capital investment for Chicago Park District renovation and development projects funded through the Parks and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) program, a provision under the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program. PARC utilizes 50 million dollars in available capital to provide investments to eligible local governments for park and recreation construction projects.

“As we head into the cold months of fall and winter, we need to make sure our indoor recreational facilities are safe, accommodating and ready to welcome children all across Chicago,” said Quinn. “Investments in these three park spaces will ensure families have a place to learn and play for years to come.”

The funding has been distributed to three specific locations within the Chicago Park District for renovation and development projects. Selected locations including the Palmer Park Field House, 201 E. 111th St., Calumet Park Field House, 9801 S. Avenue G, and Holstein Park Field House, 2200 N. Oakley Ave. will receive an estimated $1.9 million combined in renovations.
